Dear Basilea,
I know that we don't discuss politics in our church but I wanted to start a discussion about your thoughts on this historic election as we are about to induct our first African-American President of the United States. Some of you may know that my housemate is very heavily involved with politics and she has worked for the Obama campaign. After talking with her, it made me realize that although we as Christians are called to preach the Gospel, we also are called to impact this world socially for Christ as well...
Did you know that the United States would not have existed if it hadn't been for Christianity? In fact, the foundations of Western civilization has been built on Christian principles. Our most cherished Constitution itself was founded on Biblical principles. However, Christianity has not only been the driving force behind our government, but it has also been the driving force in the fields of modern science, medicine, art, music, literature and even fashion!
Unfortunately, there are many who are trying to alter the foundations of our government and kick God out of our nation altogether. First prayer was banned in schools, then the Bible, then wearing any religious clothing, and what's next? This is why I believe we need to be more involved with our nation's politics, and it starts through making our concerns known to our local government. Many of you do not know who your Congressman or mayor is. I would encourage everyone to find out who your local representatives are and to write to them regarding social issues that you are burdened about. There has always been a major battle brewing over abortion and legalizing gay marriage and I think we need to have a voice in that matter.
Well, I've said enough. What are your thoughts? Should Christians be involved with politics or is this work for the "other guys" ?
Peace!
First of all, let me apologize for not responding sooner. I've been so wrapped up in my own world that I completely neglected this website, and this blog in particular.
I wanted to thank Martin for addressing this important issue. As I shared in Bible Study a few weeks ago, when Christians get involved with social issues or politics, they are often perceived as liberal fanatics with an agenda. That's wrong! Martin brings up an excellent point that we need to be more involved politically as Christians. I would be the first to admit that I have been your typical ignorant young American who knows little to nothing about politics and barely cares about any political issues. Let's remember that Jesus told us to be salt and light. He didn't limit to where we should exert this influence. Being salt and light is not limited to our schools or work places, but includes government, social agencies, etc. Jesus didn't just rock the boat in the temple, but he went all across the board in challenging the establishment and questioning all people to re-think their values. The Bible not only addresses spiritual issues, but social/legal issues as well. As Christians, we cannot compartmentalize our lives into spiritual, academic, social, political, etc. We are ALWAYS salt and light and our influence should be felt all across society.
Thank you Martin for the wake up call
